First let me say that I recommend you WAIT
before going for Windows VISTA at least a year.
It still is in its infancy, and may present some operating problems that need to be worked out.

Ask yourself an imporant question:
Are you running applications that require 32 or 64 bit speed?

If you are determined to get Vista now
read this:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/64-Bit-Computing.html

then read this:
http://blogs.msdn.com/tims/archive/2006/05/28/609372.aspx

Don't just buy Vista because it's new and cool...you may not really be ready for it.
Right now, XP with SP2 is running smooth and fast.
Do you really need more?

One runs on a 32 bit processor and the other on a 64bit chip.

If you have an AMDx64 for example, you can use the 64 bit version (it'll bump speed up a bit.)
